Photo Field Workshop by Kayak on the Patuxent River, Jug Bay Natural Area (Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties, Maryland). Beginning and experienced photographers and paddlers are welcome. Any type of camera is perfect. Date: May 17, 2008, 8am - 4:00pm, Photo Tour includes a team of photo and kayaking experts, kayaks, an awesome lunch, dry bags for cameras and other valuables, transportation to the launch area and most importantly, fun, relaxation and wonderment! Leaders: Photo Instruction - Donna T. Jones and Andargé Asfaw, Kayak Instruction and Riverlore - Fred Tutman, Patuxent Riverkeeper, and the Riverkeeper Crew. Description: Join us for an exciting Photo Field Workshop by Kayak through the pristine tidal marshlands of the Patuxent River on the border of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties. Learn how to take great photographs and paddle a kayak all in the same day! Kayaks are a great way to experience and connect with nature. Wildlife is comfortable around this unobtrusive, environmentally friendly form of water travel. In terms of photography, the point-of-view from the water is quite different from the perspective from the shoreline. Kayaks slip into the nooks and crannies and can move into the shallows effortlessly. This capability presents wonderful photo ops. Fee: $153.75 (Note: Photo Kayakers are welcome to invite non-photographers to sign-up for this excursion. Bring binoculars instead of a camera to view the wildlife and landscape.) Meet: Meet at 8am at the Park and Ride in College Park off of I-95 to board the Magic Bus with kayaks in tow. (More trip info about photo/kayak preparation, directions, etc. will be sent to each participant after online registration has been completed.) Register: www.eventbrite.com/event/111046142 Details: After a morning photo prep session on the bus ride to the launch area, we will arrive at Hill’s bridge, a historic location by Route #4, that was once pivotal in shaping the outcome of the War of 1812. After learning the ropes of paddling the river, we'll head out to Mt. Calvert searching for terrapins sunning themselves on weather worn logs. Birds will grace us with their presence and possibly a beaver or nutria (a semi-aquatic rodent) may make an appearance. In this stretch of the Patuxent River, we'll have unobstructed views of a lush greenway that is home to nesting Bald Eagles, Osprey, Blue Herons and numerous other species. We'll continue down placid waters through acres of wild rice and wetland vegetation in all directions. We'll arrive for lunch at a 1600’s vintage mansion (Mt. Calvert) that offers a stunning 360 degree birdseye view down the river featuring unforgettable scenery. After lunch, relax, take photos or explore the ongoing archaeological dig and artifacts at this location. The woodland around the mansion offers a change of habitat for more interesting photos. If time allows it, we'll paddle up the nearby shady and tree canopied Western Branch before taking out at Jackson’s Landing, which is located at Patuxent River Park at the Jug Bay Visitor’s Center. Finally, we'll board the Magic Bus and make our way back to our vehicles, satisfied and enriched, with the spirit of the River in our hearts. Refunds and Cancellations: If you need to cancel a workshop, 75% of the workshop fee will be returned if cancellation is made 7 days prior to the date of the excursion. No refunds will be given less than 7 days before the scheduled workshop date. The good news is we would be happy to give you a voucher to attend another workshop! Weather Policy: Normally workshops will go RAIN or SHINE with the exception of torrential all-day rain or blizzard conditions. Kayak Workshops during a day of thunderstorms may cause a cancellation. If the workshop is on a Saturday, the rain date would usually be the following day, Sunday. Fog, rain and snow make for great moody photos. Dress appropriately and expect the very best!
